Installing GlobalProtect VPN

Note: GlobalProtect VPN is being enabled for the Olin Community on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. Before that date, it will appear in the Olin-managed software tools as GlobalProtect VPN (coming 1/14/2025).

Windows computers (Olin-managed)

Note: This software is listed as GlobalProtect VPN (coming 1/14/2025) before it is enabled on January 14, 2025.

GlobalProtect VPN can be installed with the Olin Software Company Portal tool. Double-click the Olin Software icon on your computer desktop(Or by opening the Company Portal in your Start menu), select GlobalProtect VPN on the Apps list, and then click Install. All configuration is completed automatically.

MacOS computers (Olin-managed)

Note: This software is listed as GlobalProtect VPN (coming 1/14/2025) before it is enabled on January 14, 2025.

GlobalProtect VPN can be installed with the Jamf Self Service tool. Click on the Olin Self Service icon in your MacOS dock/launchpad, select GlobalProtect VPN in the Browse / All software listing, and then click Install. All configuration is completed automatically. If you have any issues after installing(such as it couldn't connect to the GlobalProtect service), please reboot your Mac and try again.

Note for MacOS: Due to the nature of GlobalProtect, it is difficult to completely quit the application in MacOS. Quitting the processes through Activity Monitor could break your installation. After install through Self Service, there should also be a "Toggle Global Protect" app on your Dock that you can use to completely quit the GlobalProtect VPN after disconnecting. 

Windows computers (not managed by Olin)

  1. Open the GlobalProtect VPN Windows installer download folder (Olin login required)
  2. Download both GlobalProtect64.msi and install.ps1 into the same folder on your computer, such as Downloads.
  3. Using File Explorer, navigate to that folder on your computer.
  4. Right-click on the file install.ps1, and select Run As Admin. This will install and configure the GlobalProtect VPN application.

MacOS computers (not managed by Olin)

  1. Open the GlobalProtect VPN MacOS Installer download folder (Olin login required).
  2. Download the GlobalProtect.pkg file.
  3. From the Downloads folder that should appear in your MacOS dock, click the GlobalProtect.pkg package to install it.
  4. Follow the installer prompts to install the software package.
  5. After installing, please reboot your Mac.
  6. The first time you use GlobalProtect VPN, you will need to specify the value vpn.olin.edu before connecting.

Note for MacOS: Due to the nature of GlobalProtect, it is difficult to completely quit the application in MacOS. If you have not installed it through Self Service, quitting the processes through Activity Monitor could break your installation. Please contact the Olin IT Help Desk (helpdesk@olin.edu) before attempting to quit GlobalProtect this way so we can ensure your system is enrolled in JAMF and we can install an applet that allows you to Start and Stop the processes correctly.

Linux computers (not managed by Olin)

  1. Open the GlobalProtect VPN Linux installer download folder (Olin login required)
  2. Download the Linux installer file.
  3. Please refer to these detailed install instructions from Palo Alto.
  4. Use VPN portal address: vpn.olin.edu.

Mobile Devices (iOS, Android)

The GlobalProtect VPN app is available in both the Apple App Store and in Google Play Apps. Follow the link below to install the appropriate app. When prompted, use vpn.olin.edu as the "Portal Address."
