Getting Started With Universal Print

Tags Printing

Universal Print is a new way to access Printers around campus that doesn't require you to be on a specific network or even on campus and provides an easier way to install and print. Here is how to add a Universal Printer to your PC and Mac:

For Windows:

1) Open up your Settings app, navigate to "Bluetooth & devices"," then "Printers & Scanners."

2) Click on the "Add device" button on the right side of that window.

3) If printers don't start appearing, double check that there is a drop down that is in "Work or school." Any printers you have access to should show up momentarily and/or you can search for a key word like the building it's in. You can also click on "Select a search location" and navigate to the building, floor, then room number.

4) Click "Add device" next to the printer you'd like to install.

5) After the printer is done installing, you may need to restart any open application that you will use to print from if it doesn't show. A Universal Print printer will show like the below in your list of printers (using Microsoft Word as an example)

For Mac:

1) For managed Mac devices, you should already have Universal Print installed. If you don't, you can download it from the Apple App Store for free. Once It's installed, you should be able to open Settings, them scroll the left column to the bottom to see Universal Print.

2) Click on "Add printer..." near the bottom right of this window. You may need to sign in first near the top right of the window; this will be your Olin credentials.

3) Printers you have access to should show up organized by building and floor. You can also search by keyword with a building name

4) Click the check box to the left of the printer you'd like to install and then click "Add" in the bottom right. After it's done, you should see something like the below.

5) After the printer is done installing, you may need to restart any open application that you will use to print from if it doesn't show. A Universal Print printer will show like the below in your list of printers (using Microsoft Word as an example)

6) After submitting the print job, the Print Job window may look like the below. Due to printers having multiple paper trays, it attempts to pick the best one automatically (you can choose the tray in the print dialog) and it may take a moment for it to settle on one. You may also see various status messages in the Print Job window; the "Out of Paper" message is based on the Tray it's trying, so you can safely ignore this most of the time.
